'First Steps, after Millet' (1890), by Vincent Van Gogh

(© The Metropolitan Museum of Art)

Vincent Van Gogh greatly admired the artist Jean-François Millet, and interpreted many of Millet's works by painting 'copies' of them. But although the accepted term for this group of Van Gogh paintings is indeed 'copies,' the artist himself preferred to call them 'translations.' For example, the canvas we see here was painted from a black and white photograph of the original Millet work. Van Gogh viewed the photograph as his subject, but when painting his canvas, he interpreted the scene by using his own characteristic colors and brushstrokes, capturing the symbolism and emotional truth in Millet's work, while adding something wholly his own. 'First Steps, after Millet' by Vincent Van Gogh is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Curving over mountain peaks and rainforest canopies for more than 400 feet, this pedestrian bridge is a cable-stayed steel span held aloft by a single, towering, pylon. The views are predictably spectacular: From this vantage point over 2,000 feet above sea level, a vast expanse of the Strait of Malacca is visible, as are many of the other islands here in the Langkawi archipelago. Glass floor panels in the middle section of the bridge allow for views of a different kind—roughly 300 feet straight down into the forest below.

Lost Maples State Natural Area in Texas

(© Richard A McMillin / Shutterstock)

Nearly 3,000 acres on the upper Sabinal River in central Texas were set aside as a protected natural area in the late 1970s. These hills and canyons shaded by bigtooth maple, juniper, and mesquite trees were designated as a state natural area, not a state park, and there's a reason for the distinction. A state natural area is set up with the goal of preserving the ecosystem of the area, rather than providing the recreational options of a state park. Basically, Lost Maples State Natural Area offers hiking trails and campsites, but not much else. And that likely pleases not only nature-loving folks who visit, but also the many white-tailed deer, armadillos, bobcats, and other animals that make their home in this pristine place.
