Today is the eighty-eighth night

Today, May 2nd, is the 88th night. It is the 88th day from the beginning of spring, and it is a milestone day from spring to summer. It is also the time to pick new tea, and the tea leaves picked on the 88th night are of high quality, and it is said that drinking them will lead to a long life. And the image shows the "Wazuka Tea Plantation" located in Wazuka Town, Kyoto Prefecture. It accounts for about 40% of Uji tea production in Kyoto Prefecture and is also called "Tea Source Town". It is characterized by the rows of tea plantations that cover the steeply sloping mountainside. This landscape, which has been passed down since the Kamakura period, became the first registered landscape asset in Kyoto Prefecture, and was registered as a Japan Heritage Site in 2015 as a "History Walk of 800 Years of Japanese Tea".

The Great Wall in summer in China

In May, northern China seems to have just woken up from the picture of spring, with a fresh breath and just the right temperature, extending an invitation to distant travelers. Whether it's searching for the echoes of history in the streets and alleys of the ancient city, or looking at the mountains along the ridgeline of the Great Wall, the north in May is the most suitable for travel in the year with its clarity and stretch. Setting off at this time can not only avoid the heat of midsummer, but also harvest a light and unforgettable journey in just the right light, shadow and temperature.

The Great Wall in early summer presents a vitality that is completely different from that of spring and autumn. The rolling mountains are covered with lush vegetation, and the Great Wall is like a winding dragon, looming among the emerald greenery. When the sun is full, the masonry of the city wall looks particularly distinct against the blue sky, with a wide field of view and clear layers. The Great Wall is more vibrant at this time, but the temperature is also relatively high, especially in popular sections like the Badaling Great Wall, where there is a lot of people and a hot feeling. In contrast, areas such as the Mutianyu Great Wall are richer in vegetation coverage and the environment is relatively quiet, which is a choice for many people to avoid crowds and enjoy nature.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

They don't rush—they ripple. Meet the koi, photographed at a Lan Su Chinese Garden pond in Portland, Oregon. In many Asian cultures, these colorful swimmers symbolize patience, perseverance, and transformation. They can live for decades—some reach 25 to 50 years, and others live far longer: one koi named Hanako was reportedly 226 years old.

In China, paintings of nine koi represent wealth and prosperity, while a pair of black-and-white fish symbolizes balance, or yin and yang. The legend of a koi swimming upstream and leaping a waterfall to become a dragon reminds us to keep moving. In Japan, they are associated with samurai, embodying composure and the spirit of Bushido (the way of the warrior). Koi are also associated with love, thanks to a homophone in Japanese, and appear in Children's Day celebrations as carp-shaped streamers, or koinobori.

This May—Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month—let them inspire you to honor your roots, embrace growth, and carp-e diem—one ripple at a time.

Labor Day

Labor Day was born from a time when very long working hours were the rule, rest was the exception and complaining was costly. By the end of the nineteenth century, strikes and conflicts had spread from the United States to the world, pushing rights and security to the center of the debate. Dignity entered the agenda and, little by little, in the working hours.

In the image, a discreet choreography takes place in a building in Rio de Janeiro. Suspended by ropes, window cleaners move across the façade as if gravity were just another item on the to-do list. Down below, the city runs. At the top, someone balances to do the job that few notice: restoring sharpness to the landscape.

These are functions so present that they seem to happen alone, but it only takes one of them to be missing for the invisible to become essential. Today, the recognition goes to those who sustain the routine away from the spotlight. From the street sweepers who wake up the city to the delivery workers who shorten distances, from those who work underground to those who operate in the air, the country's machinery has as many pieces as workers.

Brighton Festival

If a city could press 'play,' Brighton Festival is when Brighton finds its rhythm. Each May, theatres glow, streets buzz and even the sea keeps time. In 2026, things turn up a notch–it is the 60th edition. From 1-25 May, the program brings together over 100 events and more than 140 artists across three packed weeks. This year also signals a change: no guest director. Instead, the festival is shaped in-house, keeping it closely tuned to the city's creative pulse.

The line-up refuses to stay in one lane–theatre, music, dance, debate and visual art sit alongside circus, hip- hop and physical comedy. Two 'Weekends Without Walls' spill performances into open spaces, where passers-by become audience members. Around 25 free events and plenty of low-cost tickets keep things accessible.

Alongside runs the Brighton Fringe, where rules loosen and surprises land often. Plan ahead or follow the noise–either way, Brighton serves culture seaside-style, no dress code required.

Labour Day

May 1st is a welcome break in the heart of spring. The air is milder, the days are getting longer, and lily of the valley blooms in the gardens as well as on the stalls. This day, which has become Labour Day, has its historical origins in the great workers' struggles of the late nineteenth century, when workers in Europe and the United States demanded better living conditions and the right to rest.

Even today, May Day retains a strong symbolic value. It reminds us that behind every activity, every service, there are women and men, their daily gestures, their commitment and their know-how. A public holiday and a time of gathering, it invites us to slow down, to take a step back and to reflect on the balance between professional and personal life. A day to recognise the efforts made and to imagine, together, a fairer future.
