A bull moose foraging through the green undergrowth, Quebec

Not one to hurry, a bull moose moves with steady purpose—and for good reason. As part of the North American moose population native to Canada, these animals are well adapted to long winters and short growing seasons. Their diet shifts with availability: in summer, they browse fresh leaves, shrubs and aquatic plants; in winter, they rely more on woody material like twigs and bark.

Bulls are typically alone, except during the autumn breeding season, when they seek out females and may engage in antler-to-antler clashes with rivals. Those antlers are among the fastest-growing tissues in the animal kingdom. Shed each winter, they begin growing again in spring—helping conserve energy when food is scarce. Females give birth to one or two calves in May or June. While adult moose have few natural predators, they are increasingly affected by climate-driven changes, especially rising tick infestations, as well as habitat loss and road traffic across their range.

Beach chairs on the Baltic Sea beach of Grömitz, Schleswig-Holstein

Countless beach chairs line the promenade on the beach of Grömitz on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein and have shaped the panorama of the coastal town for generations. As one of the oldest seaside resorts in the region, the place attracted people seeking relaxation to the sea as early as the 19th century. The appearance is determined not only by the fine sandy beach, but also by the open, wide location on the Bay of Lübeck.

With the emergence of coastal tourism, an iconic element of German beaches emerged: the beach chair. It was invented in 1882 by the Rostock basket maker Wilhelm Bartelmann for a customer who wanted to sit by the sea sheltered from the wind for health reasons. Since then, the woven seating niche has offered refuge from the changeable coastal weather and is still an integral part of Baltic Sea culture today.

In Grömitz, these baskets are just as much a part of the townscape as the sound of the waves. They symbolize a bathing tradition that is closely linked to the longing for the sea - from sunny summer days to harsh, windy weather conditions in the changing seasons.

Today is Children's Day.

Today, May 5th, is Children's Day. It is one of the national holidays, and according to the Public Holiday Law, it is intended to 'respect the personality of children, promote their happiness, and express gratitude to mothers.' The image shows koinobori (carp streamers) displayed at Himenosawa Park in Shizuoka Prefecture. They are put up every year in conjunction with the 'Himenosawa Park Flower Festival ~ Azalea and Koinobori Festival ~.' The combination of about 60,000 azaleas in full bloom in the park and approximately 160 koinobori swimming in the sky has become a symbol of the flower festival.

Ksar Ouled Soltane, Tataouine district in southern Tunisia

Today's image takes us to Ksar Ouled Soltane in Tunisia's Tataouine district, where stacked clay granaries rise like sand-coloured fortresses. Dating back to the 15th century, this storehouse complex was built by Berber communities to protect harvests from heat, theft and time. Function first. Beauty as a side effect.

Arranged around a central courtyard, the structure features rows of vaulted storage rooms known as 'ghorfas,' often stacked two or three storeys high. Their thick earthen walls help regulate temperature, keeping grain cool in the desert climate. Centuries later, filmmakers stumbled upon these structures and instantly recognised the world they were looking for. The architecture slid straight into Star Wars mythology, helping shape Tatooine, a planet whose name echoes Tataouine.

Though no longer used for storage, Ksar Ouled Soltane remains one of the best-preserved examples of this architectural tradition. Its geometric symmetry and sunbaked textures speak to a way of life shaped by arid landscapes and shared resilience—where necessity and design became inseparable.

Festival of the Cordobese Patios

Every spring Cordoba opens the doors of its intimate courtyards and transforms the city into a large garden. The Festival of the Cordobese Patios, which begins today, invites you to tour historic houses where neighbors proudly take care of pots, geraniums, jasmines, and fresh fountains. During these days, normally private patios are filled with visitors who walk calmly, look up, and discover how architecture allows light, water, and flowers to turn spaces into shelters.

The festival not only celebrates floral beauty, but also a way of life that has marked Cordoba's identity for centuries. Neighbors and families prepare their patios for months to share them while visitors stroll among white walls, bright colors, and aromas of orange blossom. Declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, this tradition turns each patio into a small stage of hospitality, conversation, and local pride and shared memory that is passed down from generation to generation.

Day of the Community of Madrid

May 2 is one of the most important dates in the Madrid calendar. The Community of Madrid commemorates the 1808 uprising against Napoleon's troops, an episode that became a symbol of popular resistance. Today the day is celebrated with official acts, culture and streets full of life.

In the Retiro Park, the monument to Alfonso XII dominates the shore of the pond, one of the most photographed corners of the city. The colonnade and the equestrian statue, the work of José Grases Riera and inaugurated in 1922, often shine under the blue sky of bright days.

On holidays, the place is filled with walkers, boats and tourists looking for the best view of the whole. Between the still water of the pond and the light stone of the monument, the Retiro offers a serene image of Madrid in spring.
