Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada

Can you picture 11,000 square kilometres of protected wilderness? That's Jasper National Park in Alberta. Established in 1907 as part of a growing network of protected landscapes in the Canadian Rockies, it was designated a national park in 1930. The park reflects both conservation efforts and much older Indigenous connections, including those of the Nakoda and Secwépemc peoples. Its terrain ranges from glacier-fed rivers and alpine meadows to dense conifer forests dominated by spruce and pine.

Wildlife is ever-present. Elk move through open valleys, moose feed in wetlands and the occasional grizzly bear or wolf is a reminder that this is their space. Caribou still roam parts of the park, though their numbers remain fragile. Do you hope to catch sight of the fauna? Trails range from short walks to multi-day backcountry routes. The Icefields Parkway offers access to glaciers and wide valley views, while Maligne Lake draws paddlers in summer. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. After sunset, Jasper's Dark Sky Preserve status reveals clear, star-filled skies.

Leopard sleeping in a tree in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

High above the savannah in Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve, a leopard curls up on a tree branch, napping as the grasslands glow at sunset. Today, let's throw light on one of the world's most adaptable big cats. Leopards roam across Africa and parts of Asia, thriving in habitats that range from forests and mountains to open savannas. Their spotted coats are unique to each individual, like fingerprints, and their powerful climbing skills allow them to stash prey high in trees, out of reach of scavengers.

The Masai Mara, part of the wider Serengeti ecosystem, spans about 1,510 square kilometres and is famed for the Great Migration, when millions of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River. This abundance of prey supports a high density of predators, including the Big Five. Mostly active at night, leopards here rely on stealth, sharp senses and patience rather than speed, blending almost invisibly into the reserve's acacia-dotted landscape.

Happy Mother!

In the silence of the woods, between the dark trunks and the soft light that filters through the leaves, a simple and deeply tender scene takes place. A mother black woodpecker clings to the trunk with confidence and reaches the cavity of the nest, where her young are waiting for her insistently. One by one, he patiently feeds them, transforming that shelter hidden in the wood into a warm space full of life. His every gesture is attentive, measured, almost affectionate in its precision. It is the care that is repeated, without words, like an ancient language that does not need to be explained.

On the occasion of Mother's Day, this image becomes a small tribute to the sweetness and silent strength that accompanies us. In the woods as in life, being a mother means being there constantly, protecting gently and giving a piece of yourself every day. And it is a gift that cannot really be reciprocated, but only recognized with so much gratitude. Best wishes to all mothers in the world!

Skradinski Buk Waterfall, Krka National Park, Croatia

Water is the architect of Krka National Park in Croatia, shaping emerald pools and layered waterfalls along the Krka River. Today's image highlights Skradinski Buk, the park's most famous waterfall system, where multiple streams spill over travertine terraces in a dense forest near the village of Lozovac.

Skradinski Buk is not a single waterfall, but a wide cascade of 17 steps stretching nearly 800 metres. These terraces form when mineral-rich water flows over moss and stone, slowly creating natural barriers that reshape the river's course. Wooden walkways cross the water, offering close-up views of rushing falls, small islands and restored watermills that once powered local communities. Beyond the waterfall complex, Krka National Park protects a network of natural waters and wildlife habitats, making it one of Croatia's most distinctive landscapes—where movement, history and geology remain deeply intertwined.

Sardinian donkey mare and foal, France

Few animals have matched humanity's quiet resilience quite like the donkey. Donkeys have worked alongside people for thousands of years, prized for their endurance, sharp memory and sure-footed confidence on rugged ground.

In the image, a Sardinian donkey mare stands close to her foal, a reminder that these animals are not only hardworking but deeply social. Native to the Italian island of Sardinia, this small, hardy breed is well adapted to dry, rocky terrain. It feeds mainly on grasses, herbs and scrub, thriving on sparse vegetation where other livestock might struggle. Donkeys form strong bonds, recognise familiar faces long after separation and communicate with brays that can travel kilometres across open land.

First domesticated from African wild asses, donkeys helped move goods, shape trade routes and support daily life long before engines existed. The Sardinian donkey, once widely used in farming and transport, is now considered a rare breed, valued for its resilience, gentle temperament and remarkable ability to make the most of even the toughest landscapes.

Canadian Tulip Festival, Ottawa

It starts quietly—rows of tulips opening along the Rideau Canal as spring settles in. Then the story catches up. The Canadian Tulip Festival begins today, marking its 74th year, but its roots go back to wartime Europe. In 1945, after Canada helped liberate the Netherlands and hosted Princess Juliana during her exile, a gift of tulip bulbs arrived in Ottawa. That tradition didn't end; it returned each year, growing into today's festival.

By 1953, the Ottawa Board of Trade and photographer Malak Karsh had organised the first official Canadian Tulip Festival, giving shape to what had begun as a diplomatic thank-you. Today, the displays trace around 300,000 blooms along key routes, including the Rideau Canal, where tulips often appear alongside spring cherry blossoms. Commissioners Park anchors the main showcase with large, organised plantings.

So why does it draw crowds every spring? Because it tells a clear, human story—gratitude, remembered in bloom, brief yet consistent, year after year.
