Happy Father's Day!

On Father's Day, we celebrate people who provide support, offer orientation and often shape more through their actions than through big words. In Germany, this day coincides with Ascension Day and is also known as Men's Day or Men's Day, especially in eastern Germany. It is an opportunity to pay tribute not only to fathers, but also to father figures who accompany, encourage and take responsibility.

In the animal world, the lion takes on a similar role: a male lion remains alert while a cub seeks shelter at his side. Adult males defend the pack and secure the offspring by warding off danger and protecting the territory. Many fathers are also familiar with this balance of closeness and freedom. They let you try things out, provide support and are there when it matters.

Whether in everyday life or in special moments, reliable points of reference help to develop trust and find one's own way. Father's Day is a reminder of the importance of people who provide orientation through support and care.

Arch and Milky Way, Alabama Hills, Sierra Nevada, California, USA

In today's image, the granite arches of the Alabama Hills frame the Milky Way over a rugged landscape in California's eastern Sierra Nevada, United States. Famous for its rounded boulders and weathered rock formations, this area formed when molten rock cooled deep underground around 100 million years ago. Water and wind gradually shaped the stone into the smooth shapes seen today. Visitors can explore the natural arches, hike among the rocks, capture photographs of the unique landscape, ride horses or mountain bikes and enjoy seasonal displays of wildflowers.

With minimal light pollution, the hills are popular for stargazing and night photography. On a clear night, the dense band of stars that forms our galaxy is visible to the naked eye. While it might look like a peaceful desert today, this terrain has played many roles on screen. Since the 1920s, hundreds of movies and television shows have used these hills as a backdrop for westerns and sci-fi adventures, including 'Yellow Sky' with Gregory Peck, 'Django Unchained' by Quentin Tarantino and the Marvel classic 'Iron Man' by Jon Favreau.

Atlantic puffins, Wales

Along the rocky coasts of the North Atlantic, Atlantic puffins make their homes in burrows and cliffside crevices. These seabirds, with their black‑and‑white plumage and colourful beaks, are classified by the IUCN as vulnerable, as overfishing and changing ocean conditions reduce the availability of their prey. Each spring, they return to breed, laying a single egg in carefully dug burrows. Remarkable swimmers, they use their wings to 'fly' underwater when hunting small fish such as herring and sand eels.

During the breeding season, their beaks brighten in colour, helping attract a mate. Observing puffins in their natural habitat reveals a seabird perfectly adapted to both air and sea, resilient yet facing modern environmental challenges. A fun pop-culture twist: these charismatic birds inspired the 'porgs'—adorable bird-like creatures in 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi.' The filmmakers embraced their likeness rather than digitally remove them from a real ocean island set.

Cannes Film Festival

Every year in May, Cannes is transformed into an open-air theatre, where cinema meets the Mediterranean. With this 79th edition, the Festival de Cannes is continuing this tradition that began in 1946 on the Croisette, lined with palm trees and bathed in saline light. The Palais des Festivals, facing the sea, becomes the beating heart of a world where images tell the story of our societies, our doubts and our hopes.

In the spring atmosphere, the red steps see filmmakers, actors and views from the five continents parade. The sea breeze mixes the smell of umbrella pines with the bursts of multilingual voices. Auteur cinema dialogues with the great popular frescoes, while the Palme d'Or consecrates works destined to mark history.

In Cannes, time stands still: between nocturnal projections and golden reflections on the water, the seventh art becomes a sensory and collective experience, profoundly human.

Great Barrier Reef from above, Queensland, Australia

One of the world's greatest natural wonders stretches through the turquoise waters of the Coral Sea off Australia's northeast shoreline. The Great Barrier Reef, running along the coast of Queensland, is the world's largest coral reef system. It is made up of nearly 3,000 individual reefs and hundreds of islands, spanning more than 2,253 kilometres.

This remarkable marine landscape supports extraordinary biodiversity, including hundreds of coral species, more than 1,600 kinds of fish, as well as sea turtles, rays, seabirds and reef sharks. Its shallow lagoons, coral cays and deeper outer reefs create a mosaic found nowhere else on Earth.

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the reef is valued not only for its size and beauty, but also for its ecological importance and deep cultural connections to Australia's First Nations peoples. Today, researchers, communities and governments work together to protect this fragile ecosystem, helping preserve the reef's complex patterns and vibrant marine life for the future.

Polar bears in Wapusk National Park, Manitoba, Canada

Captured in Wapusk National Park in northern Manitoba, Canada, today's image shows a polar bear mother and her cubs sharing a playful moment on the Arctic tundra. For polar bears, motherhood is a long and demanding commitment. Females give birth in winter, sheltering their newborn cubs in snow dens that provide vital insulation. Cubs are born tiny and rely entirely on their mother's rich, fat-heavy milk for warmth and rapid growth.

As apex predators, polar bears depend mainly on seals, especially ringed and bearded seals, which they hunt on sea ice using patience and a powerful sense of smell. They can detect prey beneath thick snow and swim long distances in icy waters, aided by large paws that act like paddles. Their thick fur and a layer of blubber help conserve heat in extreme cold.

For more than two years, the mother raises her cubs alone—guiding their movements, teaching essential hunting skills and protecting them from danger. Play helps cubs build strength and coordination before they face life on their own.
