International Museum Day

You walk into a museum, and suddenly time shifts. A fossil hints at life millions of years ago. A gemstone reflects geological change you can't see. That sense of connection is exactly what International Museum Day, created in 1977 by the International Council of Museums, aims to celebrate.

At the Natural History Museum in London, which opened in 1881, those moments come quickly. Built in Romanesque Revival style, the building reflects natural forms in its design, while four color-coded zones organize the galleries by theme. Today, it houses over 80 million specimens, spanning botany, zoology, mineralogy, and paleontology. The museum's dinosaur gallery and the massive blue whale skeleton , named Hope, suspended in Hintze Hall, are among its most recognized displays.

What draws people in—curiosity or nostalgia? Museums turn abstract ideas into real objects you can see and question. From science documentaries to films like 'Night at the Museum,' they remind us that exploration doesn't end in textbooks—it starts when you walk through the door.

Roland-Garros 2026

At the end of spring, Paris is holding its breath. Today, at the Porte d'Auteuil, Roland-Garros is waking up again, enveloped by the soft light of May and the mineral smell of clay. Under the hundred-year-old plane trees, the stadium whispers a story that began in 1891, where each grain of ochre tells the story of effort, patience and resilience.

Here, the earth is not just a playing surface: it lives, glides, clings to shoes and dreams. The balls trace slow, almost organic arcs, while the audience, attentive, follows the rhythm like a collective breath. You can hear the friction of footsteps, the breath of the players, the short cry of a won exchange.

Roland-Garros is an urban landscape transformed into a natural theatre: a place where time stretches out, where tradition dialogues with raw emotion, and where each match becomes a sensory experience, anchored in the earth and memory.

Today is International Museum Day

Today, May 18, is International Museum Day. It was established in 1977 by the International Conference of Museums (ICOM) as a commemorative day aimed at educating people about the role museums play in society. The theme for 2026 is "Museums Uniting a Divided World". The purpose of the museum is to shed light on the role of museums as a place to connect the past and the present, between people, and between the region and the world, and to think about new possibilities. Various commemorative events are held at museums across Japan, including the National Museum of Nature and Science introduced in today's image, such as free admission.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, United States

How high is high enough for a great view? In the eastern United States, it doesn't take much. Hawksbill Mountain is the highest point in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, at 1,234 metres, showing how these older mountains rely on openness, not elevation. The park's establishment in 1935 involved reforestation after extensive farming and logging. Today, much of that land has returned to forest, supporting mixed hardwoods, mountain laurel and rhododendron. What else? Some of the rocks found here date back over 1 billion years, among the oldest in the state. The park shelters over 200 bird species and 32 species of fish and remains dog friendly, allowing pets in campgrounds and on most trails.

Hawksbill's summit does not rely on steep cliffs. Instead, a stone platform built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps marks the top. From here, ridges stretch into the distance in soft blue layers, an effect caused by atmospheric scattering. Skyline Drive connects visitors to trailheads leading to peaks like this.

Smith Rock State Park, Oregon, United States

What do you call a place where the rocks do the climbing, and humans try to keep up? Welcome to Smith Rock State Park in Oregon, United States, where cliffs rise fast, and excuses fall faster. It sits inside the 40-kilometre-long Crooked River Caldera, shaped by multiple volcanic eruptions. Its welded tuff cliffs are made from compressed volcanic ash that cooled under pressure. The Crooked River carved the canyon, while formations like the Spire rise up to 180 metres.

The park helped launch modern sport climbing in the 1980s and now hosts over 2,000 routes. Trails like Misery Ridge offer sweeping views, with a side of leg burn. Wildlife keeps things lively, from golden eagles to river otters, with the occasional mountain lion cameo.

It is one of the 'Seven Wonders of Oregon,' just 30 minutes from the city of Bend. Summer can top 38°C (100°F), so spring and fall are the sweet spots, with mild temperatures and clear skies. Smith Rock keeps things simple. It rocks, you roll.

Buracão Canyon, Ibicoara, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia

Here no one arrives inattentive — and much less dry. Access follows the bed of the Espalhado River, between cold water and smooth stones, in increasingly narrow passages, where the light recedes while the sound of the river starts to lead the way.

This deep corridor of rock is the Buracão Canyon, in the south of Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia. The water worked there for thousands of years, opening cracks, deepening curves and drawing high walls that channel the flow of the river, concentrating its energy. Walking there is following the gear of the place.

When the space opens, the reaction is immediate. The Buracão Waterfall appears almost without warning, dominating everything with about 85 meters in height. In rainy periods, the volume commands respect; In the drought, the rock gains prominence. Buracão does not separate route and arrival. He transforms the route into part of the destination and shows how Brazil knows how to reveal its best secrets step by step, to the rhythm of the water.
