Happy winter solstice!

The winter solstice is here. Today marks the shortest day in the Northern Hemisphere, while last night was the longest night of the year. This has been an important event for millennia, with evidence of celebrations going back as far as 10,000 BCE. Some of the world's most famous Stone Age monuments, including Stonehenge, are aligned with the point that the sun rises or sets on the winter solstice. Traditionally, it was a time for feasting and lighting of fires to symbolize the darkest day of the year. Ancient Germanic tribes celebrated the winter solstice by bringing evergreens into their homes as a symbol of the returning light and the coming spring.

Today's image takes us to modern-day Germany. Here we can see the Loisach, a river in Bavaria, and the solstice sun just peeking out from behind the Bavarian Alps. In many parts of Germany, the winter solstice is celebrated as Thomastag. Traditions on this day include trying to predict the future for the year ahead and getting up early to work. From today, the evenings will start to get shorter, and the days will slowly but surely get lighter. Happy midwinter

Celebrating Flag Day: ‘O long may it wave’

June 14 is Flag Day, which commemorates the official adoption of the American flag in 1777. Our nation’s first flag had 13 stars and 13 red and white stripes to represent the original 13 colonies that broke from British rule. The stars were arranged on a blue background to represent a ‘new constellation.’ In 1795, as Vermont and Kentucky joined the Union, two more stars and two stripes were added. It was this version that served as muse to poet Francis Scott Key, who penned the poem that would later serve as the lyrics for ‘The Star-Spangled Banner.’ He wrote the words after watching the flag fly over the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. The flags in our image are rippling over Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Tianzhong Festival, etc., originated from the worship of natural celestial phenomena and evolved from the ancient era of dragon worship. In the middle of the summer Dragon Boat Festival, the seven constellations of the dragon ascend to the middle of the sky in the south, and are in the most "center" position of the year, that is, as the fifth line of the "I Ching: Qiangua" says: "The flying dragon is in the sky". Its origin covers ancient astrological culture, humanistic philosophy and other aspects, contains profound and rich cultural connotations, and mixes a variety of folk customs in the inheritance and development, and the content of festivals is rich. Dragon boat rowing (dragon boating) and eating rice dumplings are the two major customs of the Dragon Boat Festival, which have been passed down in China since ancient times and have not ceased to this day.
