If you drive along the Stweart-Cassiar Highway in British Columbia in fall, you're in for a colourful treat. This scenic road in the north-west of the province connects Kitimat with the Yukon border. It winds its way through some stunningly rugged locations, taking drivers past lakes, through forests and around mountains. But it's in fall that it truly comes to life, with the aspen trees along the route shedding their summer green colouring.

Aspens, like the ones seen in today's image, thrive in the region's cooler climate. When the seasons start to change, their leaves turn a brilliant yellow, contrasting beautifully with the evergreen forests and snowcapped mountains along the highway. Aspens grow in large colonies, all connected by a single root system. This means that aspen groves are actually one massive organism.

Today you will have the opportunity to visit well-preserved and intact windmills and watermills and see them in action. The German Mill Day is organized independently by each federal state, so feel free to take a look around your home country.

The post mill shown on our homepage today is the "Narrenmühle Dülken", built in 1809 and shut down in 1906. It is also the seat of the Fools' Academy, Dülken's oldest foolish association: "The Dülken Fools' Academy, the Mounted Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Enlightened Moon University".

The revellers meet in the lower part of the mill in the Fools' Museum for their meetings, on 11.11. they ride around their mill on their hobby horses. But the Narrenmühle is not only interesting for revellers, but there are real treasures there. Components of the collection are, for example, a real Eulenspiegel and a letter to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Today we’re in Rocky Mountain National Park, where Longs Peak towers above all other summits at 4,346 metres high. For most of the year, Longs Peak experiences winter-like conditions, so climbing this challenging peak requires mountaineering experience and the correct equipment – and a good amount of bravery, too! Despite the obvious challenge, every year thousands of climbers attempt to reach the summit, and those that succeed are rewarded with top-of-the-world views of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Once the home of the Ute and Arapaho peoples, then silver miners and mountain men, today Rocky Mountain National Park teems with outdoor enthusiasts of every stripe. Birdwatchers, bikers and hikers give way to snowshoers, skiers and snowboarders as the seasons change. The park is full of wildlife, including nearly 70 kinds of mammals and almost 300 bird species.

Our lonely giraffe has been pictured on the Maasai Mara. It's a large national game reserve in Kenya, and one of the world’s most important wildlife conservation areas. It was established in 1961 and is contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania – together, the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem protects some 25,000 square kilometres. In addition to giraffes, the Maasai Mara is home to large populations of elephants, lions, cheetahs, rhinos, wildebeest, hippos, crocodiles, zebras and many more creatures.

While some zoologists consider the Masai giraffe its own species, most authorities recognise just one species of giraffe with nine subspecies. Masai giraffes like this one are the tallest of those, with males reaching heights of 5.5 metres. They range from southern Kenya, south through the Serengeti, and through all of Tanzania.
